Prof. Brewer has used both laser peening (in collaboration with Metals Improvement Company, Livermore, CA) and ultrasonic impact treatment (in collaboration with Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division and SONATS Inc.) to produce compressive stresses on the surfaces of welded aluminum alloys.
